We chose this as the name for our company because we share the values embodied in this traditional symbol of leadership. In ancient Hawaiian culture, everyone had a kuleana or responsibility for the village. The elders assigned this responsibility at a very early age, based on temperament and ability. Young Hawaiians prepared for their responsibility by listening to and observing the masters, learning their craft, and practicing their skill. Those chosen to carve fishhooks were held in high regard because the village depended on this simple tool for food. The quality of the fishhooks they produced could determine survival or demise for the entire village. If the work was sloppy or poorly done, no harvest would return in the canoe. However, if the individual had learned well, carved sharp hooks, and woven strong line, then the harvest would be plentiful and the success of the village would be ensured.
Today, the Makau is worn as a badge of honor that indicates that the wearer has demonstrated responsibility, caring, leadership, patience, and a never ending quest for excellence. The recipient of the gift of a Makau is ohana, or family, to the ancient masters and will continue to take the time that is necessary, select materials that are the absolute best, and accept the responsibility of alaka'I, or leadership - and always have mana'o, an attitude of success. All of us at Makau strive to demonstrate these values in everything we do. We realize that we hold our client's reputation and future in our hands as we work.
